Making your own Custom Ringtones

I use the Audacity software to edit sound files. It’s open source, free, and the learning curve was not bad at all. Within 30 minutes I was creating my own custom ringtones for my Instinct.

Some tips on using Audacity

  • DO download the LAME MP3 encoder (see this from the Audacity FAQ) – this allows you to export mp3 files
  • If you use iTunes, you may need to convert your files from .m4a to .aac for import into Audacity
  • Take advantage of the Zoom function to get more precise control of where you place your cropping marks

I then use the rumkin.com uploader to upload the ringtones to my phone.

iTunes and the Instinct

I use iTunes almost exclusively for my music purchases. Some songs are not available on iTunes, so I turn to Amazon and Walmart. I am sure there are other good sites to purchase music, but so far these three have met my needs.

After purchase and download, I create a playlist in iTunes and burn the new songs to a blank CD. Then I immediately import that CD back in. This works well for removing any DRM copy protection issues on the music. Unless purchased directly from the Sprint Music Store, the Instinct’s music player has issues with songs containing DRM and sometimes with album art too.

The Instinct music player is just ok. It takes a lot of work to play an album in order, for example, Pink Floyd’s “Dark Side of the Moon”Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

Except for a few songs that standalone well, this album needs to be played in order and without any whitespace between the songs, which is something else the Instinct lacks the ability to do.

The Instinct comes with a CD containing Sprint’s Media Manager software. I have used it, but it seems slow to me, so I usually just use the drag and drop interface between drives to move my files. Be sure your file and folder names do not contain any unusual characters.

Recently, I dropped a folder named “Paul McCartney & Wings” into the phone. The music player had issues with folder. I ended up having to delete it and dropped it back on with a title of “Wings” and had no further issues. I didn’t spend a lot of time on this issue – I suspect the music player took offense to the Amersand (&) in the folder name, or perhaps the length.
