Accessing the Instinct’s Internal Memory

We all know you can use the USB cable to access the microSD card memory as a drive in Windows. Try typing ##672# while hooked up to the PC. If you can’t access the dialer, disconnect, press the “voice command” button, then after she says “Say a command” plug back in.

On my machine I get another drive letter assigned (now I have two) – one accesses the microSD card as expected, the other gives access to the built in memory on the phone. This is the place where all the apps, ringers, contacts are stored.

During my first venture into here, I mostly just dug around trying to see what is what, opening the .JAR files to see what they are, etc.

I found the app for the SprintTV and opened the .JAR with 7zip. Inside the .JAR file is lots of stuff, most of which I did not mess with for fear of screwing things up. I did find several .jpg files though and toyed around with colorizing those – see my post about SprintTV for a colorized version of SprintTV.

DDTM hack

I have seen this mentioned in several places, but never tried it until now.

DDTM = Data Dedicated Transmission Mode

Basically, it means if you are on your Instinct in a data session, i.e. web browsing, SprintTV, radio, NFL Live, etc, and DDTM is on, all incoming calls go directly to voice mail. If you turn this off, the incoming call will interrupt your data session.

The best set of instructions I have found is on the Instinct-Samsung.com forum here

Quoting the first post in that thread:

cliff notes version:
I tried both ways with DDTM and can verify that this works.

You need your MSL to do this mod.
Go to keypad and put in ##DEBUGMENU#
go to toggle DDTM and switch it to “OFF”

that’s it. Now phone calls can come through while you’re watching TV or listening to the radio, etc…
WooHoo!! Thanks AutoPrime and Aristo!!!

NOTE: This is a hack – use at your own risk, don’t complain to me if this bricks your phone.

BDS Settings

BDS = BREW Distribution System – a wireless data services delivery and billing environment setup by Qualcomm. BDS enables network operators to rapidly deploy wireless data services to subscribers network-wide via mobile devices.

To access this, dial ##3282# (##DATA#), then scroll down under the “Restore” option to the ”BDS” option. BDS has three settings

  • BDS URL
  • Carrier ID
  • Platform ID

On my phone, the BDS URL was set to “ads.sprint.com”, the Carrier ID = 0110, and the Platform ID = 2290

Personally, I don’t like most “ads”, SuperBowl ads being one exception, so I changed the URL to blank. Could be the power of suggestion and/or wishful thinking, but I swear the browser got faster after the change, and so far, I have seen no ill effects of changing this field.
